I was having a lot of trouble with a tooth that had a gold cap on it. I went to see my dentist and she said I needed to see an Endo Dentist and that all they do is root canals. She called Dr. White in Omaha and scheduled an appointment for the following day. I have had people tell me how terrible it is to have a root canal. I always hoped I would never have to have a root canal! But here it was and the time had come for me to face up to this dreaded operation THE ROOT CANAL! The next day we drove the hour drive to Omaha for this fearful procedure! My appointment was for 1:30pm and we were right on time. They asked me how I was going to pay for it and I gave them a Care Credit card and soon I was seated in Dr. White’s chair. Dr. White was built like a dash man or a wrestler and he needed to be all those things. The first thing he did was put a rubber piece in my mouth to keep my mouth open and over 2 and a half hours he drilled a hole through my gold crown into a front tooth till he finally hit the nerve. When he finally hit the nerve this was really the only pain I had and it wasn’t really that bad. Dr. White had shot a lot of pain killer into my mouth so for the most part it was painless. Dr White was bent over drilling for the entire 2 and a half hours. If you are going to be an Endo Dentist you better be in great shape or you won’t last! Towards the end of his work he used different drill pieces using his hands to twist the piece up and down in my tooth’s canal. The last thing he did before he sealed my tooth was squirt a bleach like solution to sanitize my tooth canal. My root canal was a much easier procedure than I thought it would be. I think the root canal cost me about $850.00.I believe I now have had almost all the dental procedures there is. You had better take care of your teeth because they are much better than having false teeth. If you need a root canal you need to have it done by an Endo Dentist. We pay our dental bills with Care Credit because you won’t pay any interest if you pay your bill in specific monthly payment amounts before the year is up. If you don’t pay on time their interest goes up to 25%. Dental work is expensive and can easily cost you thouands of dollars! We have a lot of people here in Red Oak who drive 50 miles to Creighton Dental School where they get their teeth worked on by a final year student. All the student’s work is approved by an instuctor. The cost is less than half what my local dentist charges! It is a slow process and you have to have the time to spend at the dental college. I had a friend who told me he had to make three trips to have his teeth cleaned! It has been over a year since our cat Frankie retired. Frankie had been coming in and out of our house for over five years when he became ill with a respiratory infection and was terribly sick! We took Frankie to the vet and had him neutered and got some antibiotics for him to take. We ended up giving him 3 sets of antibiotics before he finally started to get better. We used the pill pocket to give him the medicine and it was a lot easier that forcing them down his throat. Frankie has adjusted pretty well to his retirement but there are times when I think he would like to go back outside. In warm weather I open the kitchen window where he will sit for hours at a time. Frankie loves to watch birds, squirrels, people, cats and dogs plus he enjoys the outdoor smells. He has one big bad habit that drives us nuts when he uses his claws to rip our wool rug in our living room. At night we close him in the kitchen because he sometimes has stomach problems and he throws up and makes a mess. When I let him back into the living room in the morning, he stretches out and rips his front claws into our wool rug. I now follow him into the living room and pet him as he walks into the room and this usually stop him from scratching our rug. I them go into the kitchen and invite him back in to his scratching post where he really gives it a good rip with his claws. I then give him some Friskie Crispies Cat Treats which he loves! When my wife comes into the kitchen he will go over again to the post and give it a good work out so Linda will give him more treats. In the morning he sits by me and wants me to scratch his head. He also likes to race around the house and he loves to have me chase him! We sometimes play with him with a mouse on a string cat toy that he likes to chase. We put a folded blanket on the couch where he sleeps most of the time and he likes to sleep beside my wife on her recliner in the evening. He will sit partly on the lamp table and on the arm of my recliner. Frankie provides a lot of company and entertainment for us and we are glad he retired with us. Frankie loves it when our two 8 year old granddaughters come to stay for a half hour after school. He likes them to pet him and he will jump up on our kitchen table when we are playing Sorry with them. He will sit in the Sorry box and watch us play. We look foward to many years together with our cat Frankie! On our first morning in Door County we decided to drive north on Highway 42 to Gills Rock, the village at the northern tip of Door County. We left the Landmark Resort and the first town we went through on our way north was Egg Harbor. Egg Harbor got its name from explorer Cornelius Mey who had noticed the meadows were so covered with shorebird and waterfowl eggs that he call it “Eryen Haven(Egg Harbor). On up the road a way we came to Fish Creek where we stopped for breakfast. Fish Creek is the home to Peninsula State Park where 3,700 acres surrounded by water awaits. The village we came to is Ephraim that was founded in 1858 by Norwegian Moravians on the shores of Eagle Harbor. Ephraim has more than 30 historical sites you can visit. Up the road we came to the village of Sister Bay with its beautiful marina and shoreline. Sister Bay was nearly destroyed by fire in 1912 but was rebuilt and is going strong today! From there we came to Ellison Bay that was founded in 1858 and is the home of Ellison Bluffs County Park that has awe-inspiring views from as high as 200ft. above the shoreline. Soon we were coming to the northern most village in Door County, Gills Rock. Gills Rock is the home of a sight seeing tour to Washington Island and you can also book a fishing trip there. We found out when the next boat would be leaving for Washington Island and we bought tickets for the boat trip to the island and tram ride on the island. We had some time to kill so we visited the gift shops and enjoyed an ice cream treat while we waited. Soon it was time to board the sightseeing lake boat for the half hour trip to Washington Island. We enjoyed the boat ride, fresh air, and scenery on the way to Washington Island. When we arrived we were loaded on the tram that was pulled by a pickup truck for our tour of the island. The tour stopped at an Emu farm that featured a big bear and of course the emus. They charged us each a dollar to tour the farm and we thought it should have been included in the ticket price for the trip. We took a complete drive around the island and then we boarded the boat for our trip back to Gills. Touring Door County is like taking a step back in the past. The Villages of Door County look a lot like they did at the turn of the 20th century. We enjoyed our tip to Door County and I hope we can return again some day! I was sure hoping we would see a sign for the Landmark Resort where we were booked in for four nights near Egg Harbor, Wisconsin in Door County. We had been on the road for about 7 hrs and were ready to get to where we were going. I glanced off to my left and saw the Landmark Resort sign. It was in the middle of a field and looked like a monument to the resort. I turned left off the highway and after driving a couple of miles down the road we found the Landmark Resort office where we checked in. The Landmark is 6 large buildings and our room was on the second floor facing the Green Bay. The room was nice and comfortable and the view we had of the Green Bay was wonderful! We had a small private porch where we could sit out and enjoy the fresh Wisconsin air and the scenery. The first night at the landmark I got a good nights sleep because I had not slept at all the night before. The next three nights at the Landmark I had very little sleep. The worst night was our last one. We were in bed about 10 because we were leaving early the next morning for an eleven hour drive back home to Iowa. We had not been in bed very long when we started hearing a fairly loud thud from the room right above ours. The thud would come fairly regularly so we both got to where would try to anticipate hearing these loud and irritating thuds! The ongoing thud noises were almost like a form of a Chinese torture! Finally about two in the morning I had had enough and I told my wife that we were going to leave for home now! I couldn’t sleep and I was completely exhausted! I had enough vacation and my insomnia ruined it. My wife talked me out of leaving and I am glad she did. I did get some sleep that night before we hit the road for a 11 hour drive home. We never could fiqure out what was making this thud but I was happy when we were back on the Highway heading home to Iowa. No matter where you go there is no place like home! Sturgeon Bay is the first town you come to when you drive up into Door County. Sturgeon Bay is located between the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan. On our second day we left the Land Mark Resort and headed down the highway to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. We stopped for breakfast at a cafe that look like a barn. The breakfast was big and cheap and tasted like it! Ater breakfast we were back on the highway to Sturgeon Bay. When you fist enter Sturgeon Bay you notice it could be on the coast of Maine because of Green Bay and the waterfront. It looks like Sturgeon Bay looks the same now as it did many years ago. Our first stop was the Door County Maritime Museum located on the busy waterfront in Sturgeon Bay. They have built all kinds of boats and ships in Sturgeon Bay over the years and were very busy during World War II. Now they build large tug boats there. The galleries in the Door County Maritime Museum display models of boats both big and small. The ghost ship gallery on the second floor of the musuem kind of gave me the creeps!We left this museum and drove over to the Door County Museum where they displayed items and tools that people used years ago to survive in Door County. The Pioneer Fire Company station houses 3 fully restored fire trucks and fire fighting artifacts. The lower level of the museum displays storefronts and rooms from early businesses in Door County. The have a large display of antique farm equipment at the museum. The wildlife gallery presents the four seasons in Door County and a display of Mike Orthober, a national award winning taxidermist, and features over a 100 birds, deer, bear, badgers, and fish. Towards the end of July last year 2011 we returned to Oelwein, Ia to attend my 50th class reunion on a Saturday night. Our trip to Door County, Wisconsin began after leaving the class reunion on Saturday night and going to our room at the Motel 8. I had been having a rough time sleeping and after we went to bed I heard the motel’s door bell ring all night because our room was right next to the motel’s office. I did not sleep at all that night and we had a seven hour drive ahead of us. After having a continental breakfast at the motel we loaded the car and headed down Hwy 150 to Independence, Iowa, 17 miles south of Oelwein, Ia. where we hit Hwy 20 east on our way to Dubuque. Hyw 20 is a four lane road and you can make good time if you are not too afraid of the fuzz! It was a rough dive for me because I was so burned out from lack of sleep. We went past Dyersville and Farley to Dubuque where we drove down the big hill to the heart of Dubuque, Ia. where we crossed the Mississippi to head north on Hwy 151 past Plattville and Dodgeville and on to Madison, Wisconsin. At Madison we stopped at a Perkins to eat breakfast even though is was noon. The food was very good but soon we were leaving Madison, Wisconsin where we traveled north on Hwy 151 to Fon-Du-Lac, Wisconsin. At Fond-Du-Lac we took Hwy 55 N to Hwy 41 N on to Green Bay, Wis. It seemed like we would never get there! Green Bay does not seem like a big city and has a population of around a 100,000 people. You see all kinds of things about the Green Bay Packers everywhere in Wisconsin but especially in Green Bay where they really love their Packers! From Green Bay we headed north on Hwy 57 to Door County. Door County is that finger you see sticking out on the map in the northeast part of Wisconsin. We arrived at the Landmark hotel just south of Egg Harbor late in the afternoon and man was I real happy to finally arrive! It seemed like I had been driving for days! Towards the end of July last year in 2011 my wife and I headed up to Oelwein, Ia on a Friday for my 50th class reunion. I was excited about going and I had lost 15lbs so I thought I looked pretty good! We checked in to the Motel 8 and then drove to Lake Shore Country Club in Oelwein. We met a few classmates and enjoyed a BBQ ribs supper that we enjoyed. I had been having trouble sleeping but I slept pretty good Friday night and was ready to go on Saturday. We went to a local cafe that was near the motel we were staying for breakfast were we met Bernice Pederson(formally Bernice Molinsky) and her husband Dave and we sat together for breakfast. We decided to see if we could get on the local golf course but due to a big storm Friday night the course was closed. So we drove over to the local craft brewery were they were holding a tour for our class. We enjoyed a root beer and then went to lunch.We visted other friends that afternoon and later that day we went back to Lakeview County Club for my class reuion. After a buffet dinner John Sullivan, who was our class president, read the class prophecy that had very little to do with what we all ended up doing in the future. Something I noticed right away was how poorly most of my classmates could hear. One fellow had hearing aids that looked like small suitcases on each side of his head. For some reason I didn’t like going to my class reunion as much as I thought I would. Classmates always look a lot like they did when we were in high school but a little older. We left about 10 o’ clock since we had a seven hour drive to Door County, Wisconsin. I am not sure if we will ever have another class reunion but if we do I am sure I will be ready go again. About a month past I had my usual six months cleaning and check up at the dentist I have been going to for over ten years. The dentist found a small cavity between two of my front teeth and the cause was a small gap between these teeth. Food was always getting caught there and the dentist said she would fix the cavity and fix the gap. When I went about a month after my exam to have the filling and the gap fixed, the dentist never indicated that fixing my problem was any big deal. She shot me up with pain killer and started working on my problem. She finished filling the cavity and started working on the gap between my teeth. All of a sudden she started pulling my head violently side to side and I told her I did not like being jerked around and she responded with her usual I am sorry! Then she was using a tool on my teeth when something slipped and the handle of her tool struck my upper teeth hard. Again she was sorry! By this time I was starting to get mad! Her dental assistant was starting to drown me with water and she stuck the suction tool down my throat gagging me. I had had enough so I pushed her hands away and told her to stop drowning me. After 45 minutes of torture she finally was finished! It was one of the worst dental experiences I have ever had! If she would have told me at the start that it was going to get rough I would not have got so upset. If she had warned me that she was going to jerk my head around I would have been ready for it. The dentist called our office to check on me and I had my wife tell her I was not there because I was too upset and mad to talk to her. She told my wife that my dental appointment was not one of my favorite experiences. That was the understatment of the decade!I am considering changing dentists. I was 16 years old in 1959 and living in Oelwein, Ia when I heard that Buddy Holly was coming to the National Guard Armory in Oelwein where they held a teen dance every Saturday night. Buddy Holly was my favorite rocker at the time and I could not wait to see Buddy Holly and the Crickets. The night finally came for Buddy Holly to play! The Crickets opened the show by playing slow and easy jazz when all of a sudden Buddy Holly came on stage singing his big hit “That will be the day.” and the crowd erupted with screams and shouting! Buddy Holly was absolutely amazing! Last year I returned to Oelwein, Ia for my 50th class reunion and we stayed at the Motel 8 which is located right across the street from the National Guard Armory were I saw Buddy Holly play. Our local playhouse is bringing “Rave On”, the musical, to town next Sunday. It features Billy McGuigan who is the nations top Buddy Holly impersonator with Grammer winning Tommy Allsup who was Buddy Holly’s lead guitarist and Sonny West who wrote and recorded Holly’s hits “Oh Boy” and “Rave On”. I am sitting at my desk and decided to write an article about our retirement duty. All school year my wife and I have been picking up our two 8 year old grandaughters after school. Our twin daughters are working and would not be able to pick them up when they get out of school. It is like a free fall at the school. We arrive a half an hour before they let school out and we are always in the top ten in line. Some parents drive too fast when entering the school parking lot. It took most of the year for the teachers helper to remember who we were picking up. You have to be real careful because a lot of people are fleeing the school with their kid or kids in hand. When we get to our house we have just enough time to play one game of Sorry. Sorry is a game of moving four of your colored players around a board using the cards you draw and you move according to the number and direction on the card. Its really all about luck unless your grandaughters decide to gang up on you so you have no chance of winning! After they take you off the board to return to start they always bump fists! When you draw a Sorry card you can replace your player with your opponents player. They were attacking me when it made more sense to take out another player. When you replace their player you are suppose to say that you are Sorry! The game of Sorry is not a very friendly game and in fact it is a very competitive, adversarial game! We do have a good time together and the girls like the sugar free suckers we have. We look foward to their visits and will miss them after school is out.
