It is cold outside here in Red Oak, Iowa on this 11th day of February 2010 and I am writing an article about a motorcycle I owned over 40 years ago. Back then Honda started out selling very small motorcycles with small cc motors and the one that comes to mind was the Honda Dream.
We had a local Honda dealer here in Red Oak, Iowa and he was selling a lot of Hondas. Soon Honda started building larger cycles and the 350cc motorcycle was the largest they made. There was a local business that rented the small Hondas for local people to ride. From time to time I stopped in at Roger Otto’s Honda dealership to look at the motorcycles and see what was new. Roger had just unloaded a new Honda 450 Scrambler and this was the largest cc motorcycle Honda was making at that time. When I was growing up my father hated motorcycles because he thought they were extremely dangerous and he did not think much of the people he saw riding Harley Davidson motorcycles. I always wanted to have a motor scooter when I was growing up but there was no way my folks would let me have one. When Roger got the new 450 Honda Scrambler assembled he called me and invited me to take a look at it. When I saw the Honda 450 I knew I had to have it so I bought it. I had never ridden a motorcycle before so Roger took me out to the city park so I could ride it. The first time I tried riding it I fell over and since I was not going very fast I did not do any damage to it. I tried again and I started to get the hang of it and before you know it I was riding it all over town. The 450 was fast and I got a lot of looks from the kids around town when I went by on it. I rode the Honda 450 for a season and ended up selling it. I later bought my first Harley, a 1972 model FLH that I bought from a friend who need money. I went on to own a 1973 FLH that ended up getting stolen. I recovered it in Sioux City, Iowa and sold it. My last Harley was a 1989 Springer which I rode for a couple of years and then sold to a man from Germany who was going to ride it to California and then ship it back to Germany where he said he could sell it for a lot of money. I do sometimes miss riding a motorcycle. I rode a newer Street Glide that was an amazing machine, but, spending that amount of money is a huge commitment to motorcycling and I would rather have a newer 7 series BMW or a Lexus.
