A few weeks back our cat Frankie came in our house in the morning after being out all night on his usual romp. He was coughing and sneezing and we could tell he was not well. I called our vet Mert and soon we were loading Frankie into the pet taxi and headed out to Mert’s vet clinic. When Mert examined Frankie he found that his lungs were filling up and he was on the edge of pneumonia. Mert gave Frankie a shot and gave us some antibiotics in a liquid form to take home with us. We were supposed to give them to Frankie twice a day. I had to hold Frankie down while my wife Linda opened his mouth and squirted a dropper and a half down his throat. We soon found out that we should use gloves when giving Frankie his meds. Linda got scratched a few times as Frankie weighs 14lbs and he is all muscle. We kept him inside for a week and he was not very happy about it. One night he was scratching at the front door wanting to go out. We finished giving him the antibiotics but he still was coughing and sneezing so I called Mert who said he might have leukemia which is very common in cats and is very contagious. Mert said they could do a blood test when we brought him out to the clinic to see if Frankie had it. I talked to our son Adam about Frankies condition and Adam suggested that we have Frankie neutered and retire him so when we took Frankie out for his blood test we had him neutered. The blood test showed he did not have leukemia but has FIV which is aids for cats. Doc said he could live a long life with FIV but he should stay in the house because FIV affects a cat’s immune system and he could get diseases from other cats and would not last long outside. We brought Frankie home after his surgery and he has been a changed cat. He seems very happy to be in the house and has a very mellow personality. We are giving him an antibiotic in a pill pocket which he eats. It is much easier to care for him now. We are happy to have Frankie live with us full time now that he is retired and we are looking foward to spending many years with him as our house cat.
