Here it is Tuesday, December 8, 2009 and Christmas is barrelling down on us like a freight train with no brakes! Who would have thought that we would offer Birko balance, Birko motion, and Blue heeled arch supports on our online shoe store www.lionfootweardirect.com? I am sitting here in my office on 4th Street in Red Oak, Iowa watching a snow storm that is supposed to drop up to nine inches of snow on us before it moves on late Wednesday. Our son who runs Lion Water Service is in Florida with his wife and mother-in-law on a two week vacation. I seem to have a little more Christmas spirit this year even though 2009 has been a very difficult year for our business and other sad events have happened this past year. I have been sitting here thinking about some Christmases of the past. When I was 6 years old, and living in Waverly, Iowa I spotted a new sled in the window of our local hardware store. It had a pointed nose with handles on the side to steer this bright red and grey rocket looking sled down the hill. I really wanted this sled for Christmas and I pestered my folks relentlessly! When Christmas arrived I got the usual small toys and clothes but NO SLED! Then my dad said he forgot something and he brought out the rocket sled that he had stashed away. Boy was I happy! When I was 10 years old living in Oelwein, Iowa my father surprised my brother and I each with a Schwinn Black Phantom bike. My bike was red with chrome fenders, built in horn, a springer front end, and white wall tires. If I still had that bike today it would be worth quite a bit. I rode the bike Christmas Eve even though there was some snow on the ground. This bike was my favorite Christmas present when I growing up. I rode this bike for years and used it to deliver newspapers. When I was 12 years old I wanted an American Flyer train set really bad. I had a catalog of trains and the train set I wanted had a red and silver Santa Fe diesel engine with silver passenger cars. Well, the train set did appear and I was thrilled and I set it up on an old ping pong table in the basement. I had friends over and we would watch the train go round and round. All of a sudden it came to me how boring it was to watch the train go round and round. The train set really didn’t do anything very exciting! So we started building barriers out of lincoln logs for the train to try and crash through. The couplers on American Flyer trains are made out of plastic and they break rather easily. I did not ruin the train set but I sure didn’t do it any good. Well, I just hope you get everything you want for Christmas and you are nice to the people in your life that are important to you. I wish you a very Merry Christmas and let’s hope things are better in 2010!
